Chapter Seven

Calves bawled and mother cows answered. Cowboys milled around on horseback, hollering orders and telling weekend stories. Colt slammed the door of his four-wheel-drive and looked across the pasture, squinting against the morning sun. He was tired, and the day had only started a couple of hours ago. Heck, he was exhausted. How could he sleep with his libido in high gear and a sexy woman curled beside him in bed? He’d cursed himself for a fool a thousand times for insisting on sleeping with her, but every time he started toward his own bedroom, the lure of her soft, round body curving into his drew him right back. Somewhere he’d lost his mind, and for the life of him, he couldn’t find it.

At first he’d thought he was sleeping with her to prove a point, to save face, but the fact of the business was, he just plain wanted to be near Kati. If he could keep his hands off her, the situation wouldn’t be so bad, but he couldn’t do that either. Craziest mess he’d ever gotten into.

“Hey, boss, how do you like being a married man?” a rangy cowboy called from horseback.

If they only knew, he’d be the laughingstock of the barnyard. Colt shot a cranky look that brought hoots of laughter from the others nearby. One of them began singing a song about a ball and chain, his off-key tenor sending his buddies into near hysteria.

“I think Colt needs a week off to recover from the honeymoon. Looks pretty tired to me.”

With a scowl, Colt started pulling fence posts from the back of the truck.

They were right about one thing. He needed a week to recover from waking up next to Kati. Rolling out of the bed and leaving her with only a kiss on the forehead wasn’t easy. This morning she’d been snuggled against him, her hair all tangled around his hands and face so that he was captured. It was his own fault. She braided her hair before bed, but he took it down as soon as he’d crawled in beside her.

He couldn’t figure out what was going on. Even now, just thinking about her, he wanted to throw down his fencing pliers and go back to the house. He’d had other women, plenty of them, but since Kati entered his life he’d been able to think of little else. That wasn’t like him. Normally he would have a fling, then go on back to business as usual. Maybe that was the problem. He hadn’t actually had Kati, and the chase had always been more fun that the catch.

Or maybe he was attracted by the novelty of her inexperience, her shy behavior when they were alone. Despite her earlier protests she seemed to welcome his kisses, and that gave him hope that she’d eventually welcome the rest of him. Maybe she really was innocent and needed this time to be wooed. He enjoyed that notion. A man liked to think he was the only one who’d ever touched his woman whether it was true or not.
